Legionnaires start at showcase

The Sarnia Legionnaires will begin their regular season with two games at the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) Showcase on Sept. 6-8 in Pelham.

The Legionnaires will play the Buffalo Regals of the Golden Horseshoe Conference on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. and the Caledonia Corvairs of the Midwestern Conference on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m.

All 26 teams in the GOJHL will play two games apiece in the showcase, which returns after a one-year absence.

The showcase was cancelled last year due to infighting among teams over the league’s fees and budget, among other issues.

Braves back in first place

Winning pitcher Mike Damchuk went six innings as the Sarnia Braves beat the Ilderton Red Army 5-3 on Wednesday at Errol Russell Park.

Nick Baljeu pitched two innings for the hold and Wade Babula earned the save with a perfect ninth.

Vince Caschera hit his sixth homer in two weeks, Justin Randall had two RBIs, and Brennan Healy and Brad Hill each had one RBI.

The Braves rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-3 lead.

Damchuk improved to 4-0 for the first-place Braves (10-4), who took a half-game lead over the Red Army (10-5).

The Braves are scheduled to visit the Exeter Express on Friday and host the Lakeside Lizards at 2 p.m. Sunday at Errol Russell Park.

Wranglers to salute Myers

The Wyoming Wranglers will honour Toronto Blue Jays draft pick Noah Myers of Wyoming on Tuesday, July 23, at Canton Park at 6:45 p.m.

Wranglers and Lady Wranglers players are invited to wear their jerseys on Noah Myers Night. Fans are asked to wear Wranglers or Blue Jays gear.

Myers, a Wranglers alumnus, was a 30th-round pick by the Blue Jays in the Major League Baseball draft this year.

He was an All-American outfielder in the National Junior College Athletic Association this past season as a sophomore. He led Division I with 77 stolen bases and 92 runs in 59 games with Wabash Valley College.

Legionnaires’ golf tournament

The Sarnia Legionnaires will host the Sharon Williamson Memorial Golf Classic on Sunday, Aug. 25, at Greenwood Golf Club at 1 p.m.
