Peguis First Nation hosted the Hockey Manitoba Male Midget A Provincial Championship at the Peguis Multiplex from March 15 to 17, and an Interlake team almost captured the provincial banner.
However, it wasn’t to be for the Gimli Vikings as they were shut out 4-0 by Sagkeeng White in the gold-medal game on March 17.
The Vikings won their opening game 6-4 over Sagkeeng White on March 15, but lost to Thompson 6-4 the next day.
In the quarter-finals, Gimli faced the host team from Peguis and won a tight contest, 4-3 in overtime, on March 16. The Vikings then held off Flin Flon 4-3 in the semifinals to advance to the gold-medal game.
Lake Manitoba wins bronze
Lake Manitoba was the other team from Interlake Minor Hockey to win a medal, defeating Flin Flon 7-1 in the bronze-medal game on March 17.
The team was doubly victorious on opening day, winning against Beausejour, 6-2, and defeating Gladstone 8-4, with both games played on March 15.
After a day off, Lake Manitoba lost to Sagkeeng White 3-2 in the semifinals on March 17.
Peguis, Arborg fall in quarters
Both the host team from Peguis and the Arborg Falcons could not advance past the quarter-finals, as the Falcons were blanked by Sagkeeng White 3-0 on March 16.
The Falcons won against Sagkeeng Red 4-1 on March 15, but fell to Flin Flon 3-1 in pool play on March 16.
Peguis defeated Gladstone 10-4 on March 15, but later lost to Beausejour 5-3 on the same day.
