The female U18 AAA Interlake Lightning are winless no more.

Taylor Audette scored the game-winning goal for the Lightning in the third period on its way towards a 5-3 victory over the Pembina Valley Hawks at the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex in Stonewall on Oct. 19. The result puts Interlake into the win column for the first time in its Manitoba Female Under-18 Hockey League campaign and improved its record to 1-3-1 and three points for the season.

The Hawks, in the middle of three straight games, fell to 1-3-0 and two points in the standings.

After two periods of play, the Lightning led the game 3-2 despite being outshot 25-11 by Pembina Valley. Kennedy Hauser, Megan Humeniuk and Danica Prociuk all scored for the Lightning, while Abbey Bourdeaud’hui and Jasper Devloo each scored for the Hawks.

Bourdeaud’hui tied the game for Pembina Valley in the third period, but Audette later responded with her marker. Interlake’s Natalie Chivers later scored in an empty net, sparking jubilation among Lightning players on and off the ice.

Katie Dorsch made 31 saves for the Lightning in the contest, while Tria Enns stopped 18 shots for the Hawks.

Chiefs 9  Lightning 0

Interlake’s momentum was shortlived as the Yellowhead Chiefs routed the Lightning 9-0 in Shoal Lake on Oct. 20.

Joie Simon scored a hat trick for the Chiefs and her teammates Jena Barscello, Kasey Fouillard, Toni Koshowski, Mya Kubrakovich, Callie Maguire and Kora Tibbatts also found the back of Interlake’s net.

Sadie Quane was the winning netminder for Yellowhead. Game statistics for the Lightning were unavailable at press time.

The next league game for Interlake will be against the Central Plains Capitals at BDO Centre in Portage la Prairie on Nov. 1.
