Sigurbjorg Stefansson Early School and the Gimli Kiwanis jointly host a program for Grades 3 and 4 students called The Terrific Kids Club.

The program has been in operation for almost 10 years and runs monthly over the lunch hour. The club teaches children about participating in the community through citizenship activities and volunteerism.

“Our young students are able to learn the importance of helping others and giving back to the community,” Sigurbjorg Stefansson principal Rosanna Cuthbert said in an email to The Interlake Spectator. “The mandate of the club is to teach students how to make our world a better place.”

Margaret Stanicky of the Gimli Kiwanis helps SSES principal Cuthbert to run the program. She and other members of the Gimli Kiwanis host a welcome back barbecue for the students and staff in the fall. Every October, the students also elect an executive committee for the club, teaching them about democracy, electoral processes and leadership.

A club president, vice president, treasurer and secretary are all nominated and elected by vote.

Other events include a pancake breakfast every spring and an annual garage sale in June. Proceeds from the garage sale go toward a charity of the club’s choosing for that year. Toys, books, games and other items are collected for that favourite community event.

Plastic bags are also collected year-round for repurposing into benches, planters and other functional items for the school and community, giving club members an insight into environmental awareness.

SSES considers the Gimli Kiwanis as an excellent role model for early learners. They have also been a major sponsor of the SSES community natural playground and are actively engaged in school activities.

This year, the classroom is packed with students wanting to participate.
