Forty-five people attended the 25th anniversary of the Interlake Forest Centre, situated between Hodgson and Fisher Branch on Hwy. 17 Sunday. The forest centre is affiliated with the Manitoba Forestry Association of Winnipeg.

A wiener roast picnic in the park kicked off the celebrations, followed by a gathering at the interpretive cabin, where special guest speakers brought their greetings, gratitude and some of our past history to life.

Speaking for the Manitoba Forestry Association Inc. was Al Mackling, director at large and former minister of natural resources. Mackling originally participated in the grand opening 25 years ago.

Patricia Pohrebniuk, executive director of the Manitoba Forestry Assoc., dedicated a plaque and broke the ground for the ceremonial planting of an anniversary tree.

Interlake MLA Tom Nevakshonoff brought greetings from the province. Fisher Reeve Denis Dandeneau and Coun. Brian Karsin represented the RM of Fisher.

Bill Stilwell of Neepawa, the natural resources officer (NRO) for the area at the Centre’s inception, spoke on its historical beginnings.

Anniversary cake for attendees followed, with volunteer Lynn Huff giving thank yous and a guided walking tour.

The volunteer staff would like to thank all the special guests, community members and supporters who came from near and far, the furthest being England.

Thank you to Dianne Beaven whose late father Allen was instrumental in the beginning of the Centre, Bill Baker of MB Forestry Association (retired), past director James Thiessen, current NRO Joe Pope, Smoky Bear and the ladies who were such great hikers!

The Forest Centre is a public facility operated by volunteers. It’s an environmentally sensitive area that boasts several uncommon and rare plants. Come out and discover your own backyard!
