Mermaid's Kiss Gallery has offered up one of Manitoba's best-known artist's works as a prize to help out the Gimli Humane Society.

Linda Vermeulen, owner of the gallery, made the announcement this week that Ken Gordon's 1984 oil-on-panel painting, titled "Sunlight Harvest", will be the star of this year's fundraising event for the Humane Society.

"I thought it was time that we supported the work of the Humane Society," she said.

Vermeulen says the public is invited to come to her gallery in Gimli, catch a glimpse of Gordon's many works and donate to the cause. Names will be entered in a draw to be held Dec. 19 for the painting which is valued at more than $900.

"It would make a great gift, just in time for Christmas,' she said.

Rene Granger, manager of the Gimli Humane Society shelter, says the recent recession has even hit operations such as his. "Our donations are down 35 per cent from last year due to the recession so we can always use additional funds," Granger said.

With a steady supply of dogs and cats (currently nine dogs and 11 cats ready for adoption at the shelter) Granger says he relies on volunteers to provide most of the love and attention to the animals.

"It says a lot for our volunteers and for the community that we have our own animal shelter in a small community like ours,' he said.

Ken Gordon's art has been likened to the works of the famous Group of Seven Canadian artists and has continually increased in value since his death in 1998.
