Studying science can take students down a road they hadn’t anticipated. So it was for two students at Arborg Early Middle School.
Allison Surminski and Kaitlyn Kindzierski were researching ideas for their annual Science Fair project. The pair selected a study of the treatment of animals used in research. While studying the various techniques used in animal research labs, the two students found out that Gimli Humane Society was in dire need of food and support for the dogs and cats under its care.
It was then that the young students decided to pool their efforts and rally classroom support to raise funds and food donations for the cash-strapped facility.
To-date the group has gathered more than 50 lbs. of food and cash donations that continue to grow.
“We heard from our teacher that they were desperate for food and things like kitty litter, toys and treats for the animals,” Surminski said.
Richard Truscott’s class will continue its effort through the month of April when they will launch a ribbon campaign to aid the four-legged friends at the Gimli shelter.
