Homeless for the holidays

Following a year-long debate over the legal status of the only animal shelter servicing the needs of Dunnottar, Winnipeg Beach, Riverton and the RM of Gimli, nothing much has changed. Now operating under the new banner of the Gimli Humane Society the animal shelter remains stretched to the limits.

It’s a full-house at the animal shelter, located in the Gimli Industrial Park, and manager Rene Granger wants to find new homes for more than 10 dogs and eight cats.

“That’s the sad reality of being an animal shelter – we always have a full house,” Granger said.

Granger says the financial challenges of running the newly formed non-profit Gimli Humane Society remain the same. “Our budget for food, vet bills, advertising and upkeep of the building are about $30,000 a year,” Granger said. Despite the financial crunch facing the shelter, Granger is optimistic the community will answer the call. “It’s amazing that a small community like we have here can support its own animal shelter.”

For those who wish to donate, volunteer or provide a home for one of the dogs or cats at the shelter, Granger and the Gimli Humane Society can be reached at 642-4775.
